During the 2010 Missions Conference at Harvest Baptist Church, a number of guests have had the opportunity to minister and be ministered to during this special week of meetings. Dr. Jim Schettler, Pastor of First Baptist Church in Santa Maria, California and his wife Marilee along with a team of seniors from Valley Christian Academy in Santa Maria have had multiple opportunities to minister and challenge the local church body. During each service, Pastor Schettler has spoken on different topics related to missions from “How to Roll Away Stones so Christ can Give the Dead Life,” to “The Most Important Word in Prayer.” During each service, the VCA students have helped minister to the children during the “Get Out of the Bleachers and Into the Game” children’s program in the Family Life Center. Pastor Schettler and the students have have also ministered during the week in HCA and HBBC/I chapel. Not only have the VCA seniors helped but they have also been able to enjoy the island of Guam during what is also their Senior Trip. The students have gone on hikes and plan to enjoy jet skiing and a boat trip on the ocean later in the week. Also joining us during the conference is Missionary Peter Blake from Australia who has spoken in chapel at HCA, shared about his ministry during the Tuesday night service, and recorded a future radio interview for KHMG.

Fresh Water Conference

by John ~ March 9th, 2010

Each year during the Harvest Missions Conference, a number of Harvest Baptist Bible Institute graduates are invited to participate in a parallel set of meetings known as the Fresh Water Conference. This year, Joe Abraham (Kosrae, Class of 2001) and his wife Kenye (Class of 2000), Noland Tash (Marshall Islands, Class of 2005) and his wife Christy, and Salomon David (Pohnpei, Class of 2008) were the special guests. Throughout the week, not only do these guests enjoy all of the Missions Conference activities, they also have the opportunity to minister to the HBBC/I students and be ministered to during sessions with the Harvest Pastoral staff. This week is truly a time of refreshment and encouragement for the HBBI alumni as they continue to serve the Lord faithfully on their home islands.

Missions Conference Information and Photos

Keynote speaker Dr. Jim Schettler

Join Harvest Baptist Church for the 2010 Missions Conference continuing through Thursday, March 11 at 7pm each evening. The purpose of this year’s conference is to inform our people of the responsibilities of the local, regional, and global commission in Acts 1:8, to ignite a passion to surrender ourselves (Acts 13:4, II Cor. 8:5), and to instill a need for giving to our Faith Missions Giving (II Cor. 8:10-11). Services will take place in the Harvest Auditorium. A nursery is provided in the church nursery facility and a children’s missions program in the Family Life Center.

Keynote Speaker: Pastor Jim Schettler
First Baptist Church, Santa Maria, CA
Dr. Jim Schettler joined the family of First Baptist Church, Santa Maria, California, in January 2007.  Jim grew up in Michigan but spent the last 31 years in Pensacola, Florida.  After graduating from Pensacola Christian College, he became the Youth Pastor for the Campus Church.  After seven years of Bible teaching and youth pastoring, he served as the senior pastor for Campus Church for 18 years.  He and his wife Marilee have been married for 28 years and have three sons, Ben (also a pastor), Luke, and Drew.  Heard and seen for many years on Rejoice Radio and Rejoice in the Lord television broadcast, Pastor Schettler’s excitement for the Lord and heart’s cry to bring the lost to a saving faith in Jesus Christ permeates his preaching, teaching, and outreach.  Jim’s weekly sermons can be accessed from his church’s home page.

Missionary Speaker: Peter Blake, Australia
Pete is a native Aussie who grew up in Brisbane, Queensland and was called into the ministry at the age of 17. In 1991, he travelled overseas to study missions at Northland Baptist Bible College. Upon graduation, Pete joined the Steve Pettit Evangelistic Team and ministered with them for 3 years. While attending Bob Jones University in 1998 to work on a graduate degree, the Lord allowed Pete to meet Jessica (who was teaching on the music faculty) and they were married at the end of the following year. In 2001, the Blake family returned to begin missionary work in Australia. They are currently assisting in the preaching, youth and music ministries of Ingham Independent Baptist Church and have the oversight of the ministry of Camp Benaiah. Additionally, Pete serves as a chaplain in one of the local public schools and engages in itinerant ministry to other churches throughout the year. The Lord has blessed Pete and Jessica with 4 children: Nathan (9), Abby (7),  Jeremy (5), and Christa (2).

Children’s Missions Program: Pastor F. G. Homsher and the Valley Christian Academy Youth Group

Homsher, and with assistance from the Seniors of Valley Christian Academy in Santa Maria, California, children will have the opportunity to have fun, learn about missions, and be challenged during a program designed specifically for them.

Ladies Prayer Meeting

by Tamah ~ March 1st, 2010

Tuesday, March 2, 2010: With Missions Conference around the corner, the ladies focused their attention on the world around them. The ladies began by singing “Day by Day” and “Sweet Hour of Prayer” to set a tone of quiet worship and prayerfulness. Mrs. Fremont spoke on how to pray for missionaries and what to pray for them…things like safety, a close walk with the Lord, special needs to be met, for the children to walk with the Lord and for contentment were a few of the ideas she gave.  The ladies then broke into small groups to pray for some of our missionaries and their needs. After praying, the ladies then were able to eat food from around the world and spend time talking and encouraging each other. It was a good meeting of quiet reflection and prayer.

HCA Chamorro Fiesta

by John ~ February 26th, 2010

Friday, February 26, 2010: Living on a tropical island with a rich cultural heritage is a wonderful experience. The students of Harvest Christian Academy had the opportunity to enjoy a little “island life” during the school day on Friday. To begin with, students came to school dressed in a variety of colorful island shirts, shorts, and dresses. The entire student body along with parents and relatives were welcome to purchase a delicious Chamorro feast including chicken kelaguen, red rice, BBQ beef, fruit, and vegetables. The Senior Class helped with lunch in order raise funds for their upcoming class trip. Classes all across campus enjoyed special island and cultural themed events like the “Capture the Coconut” game in sixth grade with teams like the “Taylorfofo’s” and “Potterita’s”–a nod to Guam villages like Talafofo and Santa Rita. Fourth graders were visited by a canine unit in order to learn how island officials are working to control the brown tree snake population. Fifth graders are learning about World War II and viewed a movie to learn about the Japanese occupation of Guam during that time period. A number of the younger children enjoyed a real treat–a visit from a Guam caribou. Some got to pet the large beast while others even enjoyed a caribou ride. All the students were dismissed early and were excitedly looking forward to a long weekend with no school on Monday as the island marks “Discovery Day!”

HCA Spelling Bee

by Tamah ~ February 25th, 2010

February 25, 2010: Salmonella, begonia, susceptible and gregarious were just a few of the many words the fifth through eighth grade spelling bee contestants heard on Thursday afternoon, as HCA looked for a champion speller. Beginning with twenty seven students and working down to one was quite a challenge, as it took ten rounds to find a winner. The spelling bee participants included two representative from each class in fifth through eighth grade at Harvest. The rest of the students from the classes looked on as Miss French would give out the words to spell. Students could ask for a definition, for the word to be used in a sentence, for the word to repeated, and even for the etymology of the word before having to spell their given word. Fifteen students didn’t make it past the first two rounds, but it took eight more rounds to get down to two students. Finally, Maria Borja, a sixth grader, and Riae Ahn, a seventh grader were the last two remaining. Eventually, Riae outlasted Maria for the spelling bee victory. Riae will have the opportunity to compete in the island wide competition, representing Harvest, for the opportunity to go to the States, to represent Guam. The Island wide Spelling Bee will be held on March 13, 2010, at the Marriott Hotel. Congratulations, Riae!
