The most exciting week of the year for 7th-12th grade students at Harvest Christian Academy has come to an end. Spirit Week 2010, Army vs. Navy, featured awesome games and competitions–military style. Throughout the week, students were also challenged in the area of their spiritual condition during special sessions with guest speakers Mark and Mike Herbster. Each morning, the 7th-12th grade students arrived at HCA in their green and blue attire, depending on which team they were representing. The mornings began with team challenges followed by the a combined chapel session. Jr. High and Sr. High students then split up for separate game times. Each day of Spirit Week also included brain challenges, more games, and another challenging session with the Herbsters. The final day of Spirit Week was highlighted by Skit Time–where the students pack into the Family Life Center and see their teachers perform hilarious antics on stage. After Skit Time, the Spirit Week winner was announced. Congratulations to this year’s winner: ARMY!! Although Spirit Week has come to an end, the decisions the students made throughout the week will impact them throughout the year and for the rest of their lives.

Monday, August 16, 2010: For the students of Harvest Christian Academy–and their parents–summer is officially over! The downpour of rain and the multiple road construction sites across Guam might have delayed some students, but it could not keep the first day of school from getting under way. Nervousness and excitement were in abundance across campus…and that was just the teachers! Once the students started pouring out of a variety of vehicles and scampered to their classrooms (while trying to avoid the rain) their were smiles and hugs as old friends reunited with one another while at the same time greeting new classmates and teachers. Students and teachers alike started the first day looking ahead to a new year full of learning and opportunity.
August 15, 2010: The local body of Christ that is also known as Harvest Baptist Church took some time on Sunday morning to focus on building a healthy church body. During Sunday School-also known as the Adult Bible Fellowships-and the Morning Worship Service, everyone gathered in the Family Life Center. Pastor Herron examined Romans 12 and focused on the importance of every church member contributing to a healthy church body. Between the two sessions, many enjoyed refreshments while taking time to meet various church ministry leaders and learn more about the needs in each area. During the second session, Doug and Karen Abels also presented a humorous illustration of a body that was lacking in unity and connectedness. The goal of the morning Body Building Seminar was a local church body that was united for the cause of Christ and growing for Him.
August 12 & 13, 2010: The Family Life Center was a hub of anticipation and excitement for hundreds of students and their parents on both Thursday and Friday night during Parent-Teacher Orientation at Harvest Christian Academy. Each session began in the Family Life Center as the principals would introduce the Faculty for each specific age group–K3-6th grade on Thursday and 7th-12 grade on Friday. After a number of announcements, the students would then gather in their homerooms and meet their teachers in person for a time of instruction and reminders for the beginning of the new school year. Students had the opportunity to sit at their desks or find their lockers while parents were able to ask any last minute questions. As the sessions came to an end it could only mean one thing–the first day of school was only a couple of days away!
Wednesday, August 11, 2010: Harvest Baptist Bible College held a special reception welcoming back returning HBBC students and greeting new students for this school year. During the reception, the students enjoyed watermelon and cookies, listened as some of the students shared testimonies of how God worked during the summer and then were introduced to the faculty, dorm supervisors, and room leaders. Each student received a gift bag with items that they will need for the beginning of the school year. On Thursday and Friday, students will be receiving work training and then continue with a week of orientation sessions on Monday. Please be in prayer for the HBBC faculty, staff, and students as they embark on a brand new year.
The first day of school at Harvest Christian Academy is Monday, August 16 and the faculty and staff are already back on campus preparing for the new year. Believing that it is vitally important for each and every member of the Harvest team to be completely prepared in every area, over a week of meetings and planning sessions will take place before the first day of school. After a couple of days preparing the classrooms, everyone met together during the first day of meetings on Thursday, August 5 for a time of fellowship, singing, and introductions for new and returning staff. Pastor Marty Herron shared a challenging message on “Six Keys Areas for Maintaining a Vision” from the life of Paul and the writings of J. Hudson Taylor and J. Oswald Chambers. After a delicious lunch together the Harvest team continued to meet and prepare together in smaller groups. The operational staff met with guest speaker Dr. Bobby Wood of Northland International University. He turned to Acts chapter 6 and shared lessons from the life of Philip that illustrated that the proper Spirit-led character and actions can end in tremendous results for the cause of Christ. The Harvest Baptist Bible College faculty as well as the Harvest Christian Academy faculty also met in departmental meetings in the afternoon. The time of preparation continued on Friday during sessions with Dr. John C. Vaughn, President of the Fundamental Baptist Fellowship International. Friday evening the faculty and staff gathered for a fiesta and fun time of fellowship. The time of preparation continues for another week with more spiritually enriching and challenging sessions to help each member of the Harvest faculty and staff to be completely prepared to “Share the Vision” this year through the ministry of Harvest.
July 30, 2010: Harvest Baptist Church hosted a wedding reception for Music Minister Kevin Inafuku and Misty Herron (daughter of Pastor and Mrs. Herron). The Family Life Center was transformed into a reception hall for the night as those in attendance enjoyed delicious food, heard challenges from several couples in the church directed towards the Inafuku’s, listened to special music, and watched a slideshow of pictures from the couple’s life plus video highlights from the wedding itself. The evening was a special opportunity to celebrate with the Inafuku’s and Herrons. It was as if those in attendance were transported to Hawaii for the original reception which took place on May 31 after the wedding ceremony. Congratulations Kevin and Misty!
The final week of Guahan Christian Camp for the summer of 2010 has come to a close and what a week it was. From Monday July 19 to Thursday July 22, rising 3rd through 6th graders gathered for a week of Junior Camp with guest speakers Pastor Joe Henson and his wife Garthea. Pastor and Mrs. Henson spoke in two daily chapel sessions-one in the morning and one in the evening. This week’s theme was “The Armor of God and How We Should Use It.” Pastor Henson reminded the campers that before they could wear God’s armor, the campers needed to be saved. The Biblical teaching each day was an important part of the week but there were many other components as well. On Monday, the campers traveled to Shepherd’s Fold Christian Camp in southern Guam and went swimming in the river, hiking, and more outdoor adventurous activities. Tuesday was a time for bowling and arcade games. Wednesday–Liberation Day on the island of Guam–the campers played extra games like “Sharks and Minnows” and “Everlasting Dodgeball,” had a fun cheering contest, and then watched the holiday fireworks at the end of the day. During the last day, campers enjoyed a game called “steal the bacon” and a final chapel session with Pastor Henson. During this last session, Pastor Henson challenged the campers to be growing and reading the Word of God each day. Another great week of camp is over but the memories and spiritual decisions will last for a life time.
