Christmas Fiesta and HBBI Concert

by John ~ December 25th, 2008

‘Twas the last Sunday before Christmas during an afternoon service at Harvest.  Everyone was full from a great Christmas fiesta and their was one special gift to open before an afternoon siesta.  The HBBI students were all dressed in their red and their black while the guitars and ukes played along in the back.  The music rang out during song after song and all knew that the wait for Christmas would not be too long.  The last strum of the guitar marked the end of the day, and everyone soon left on their way.  But the music continued in the hearts of those heading to their homes both far and near.  From everyone at Harvest, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

FLC: Gymnasium Floor Update

by John ~ December 20th, 2008

Although the Family Life Center will be used for multiple purposes (hence the original name–Multiplex), one of the most anticipated areas of the new building will be the brand new gymnasium.  For years and years church members and especially school parents and students have longed for a home court for athletic events.  That long awaited dream took another step closer to reality as the gym floor was recently installed.

The contractor spent several days working with a special leveling cement compound to bring the floor into a very small tolerance in preparation for the final playing surface.

Because the floor topping has to be extremely dry for the playing surface to adhere properly, it was necessary to run the air conditioning at cold temperature around the clock.  This will help bring out the moisture from the concrete.  Work continues on getting the conditions just right so the final Teraflex flooring can be installed.

The dividing curtain was also prepared and installed. The curtain will be used in order to allow multiple events to go on in the gymnasium area of the FLC at the same time.

Work on the FLC continues inside on the classrooms, chapel, and excercise room.  Look for a new update on the FLC progress each week.  In the meantime, CLICK HERE to visit the Family Life Center page and see a continuously updated photo of the building as well a brand new 360 degree photo taken from the center court of the gymnasium.

HCA Christmas Concerts

by John ~ December 19th, 2008
The HCA High School Choir

The HCA High School Choir

Friday, December 19, 2008: The final concert of the Christmas season provided the perfect setting for concluding the school year.  The High School Choir, under the diretion of Mr. Kevin Inafuku, began the evening singing “Everywhere Christmas Tonight.”  Whether that was the case or not, it was definitely Christmas in the auditorium at Harvest during the entire concert.  Mr. Jeff Borchardt, narrator for the night of music, shared interesting background stories and tidbits about many of the selections including “Somewhere in My Memory” as well as the difficulty about singing about winter before “Winterlight.”  Miss Kelly Schlarb then directed the Advanced Orchestra in selections such as “Journey of the Magi” and “Bells and Pizzicato.”  A number of woodwind and brass instruments joined the orchestra to perform as a symphony for the first time in school history.  Those in attendance who heard the beautiful music they performed during the “Ukranian Bell Carol” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” left hoping that tonight was just the first of many performances for the HCA Symphony.  The concert of incredible Christmas music continued with the Select Band, again under the direction of Mr. Kevin Inafuku, performing “A Cambridge Carol,” “Away in a Manger” among others.  The Select Band ended the evening with the perfect selection, a medley of music from “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Although you can no longer hear the delightful music performed on this night, you can check out a variety of photos when you CLICK HERE.

Harvest Christian Academy Junior High Choir

Friday, December 5, 2008: Parents, students, HCA faculty and staff, and guests were amazed when they walked into the Harvest auditorium on this Friday night to find it transformed into the perfect setting for a Christmas concert with an amazing assortment of decorations and lights.  After letting their eyes take in the beauty of the Christmas decorations, everyone was treated to a night of Christmas music from the Junior High Choir and Band and the Senior High Band.  The Junior High Choir, under the direction of Miss April Briggs, began the evening with a number of Christmas songs and evoked smiles and laughter with their final selection–a rendition of “The Twelve Days After Christmas.”  After a brief intermission, the Junior High and Senior High Bands, under the direction of Mrs. Michelle Hamilton, continued the evening of Christmas music with selections like “Jingle Bell Jamboree,” “A Christmas Proclamation,” “Holiday Cheer,” and “Fantasia on a Christmas Carol.”  To enjoy a variety of photos of all the students who performed, CLICK HERE.  You can also enjoy more music in person as the HCA concerts continue in the community this week at the Agana Shopping Center on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 1:30 p.m.  The final HCA Christmas concert featuring the High School Choir, Select Band, and Advanced Orchestra will take place in the auditorium on Friday, December 19th, at 7 pm.

HCA Eagles: 2008 IIAAG Soccer Champions

The Harvest Christian Academy Eagles receive the championship trophy

Tuesday, December 16, 2008:  The Harvest Christian Academy high school boys soccer team defeated the Simon Sanchez High School Sharks in the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam (IIAAG) soccer championship 3-1. For a variety of photos during the game and postgame celebration, CLICK HERE.  The monumental victory wrapped up an undefeated season for the Eagles as they claimed the school’s first trophy in high school sports.  A IIAAG record 1,163 fans packed into the stands at the Guam Football Association field in Harmon with the vocal majority wearing blue and gold and cheering for the Eagles.  The fans did not have to wait long as Marcus Lopez scored an early goal to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead.  The defending champion Sharks quickly answered with a goal of their own to tie the score at one goal apiece.  Minutes later, Marcus Lopez scored his second goal of the night on a penalty kick.  The 2-1 lead for Harvest lasted through the first half and the majority of the second, even though both teams had plenty of opportunities to score but both teams locked down their defensive efforts to keep the score close.  During one brief span during the second half, three shots that looked like sure goals for Harvest were either stopped by incredible saves from the Shark’s goalie or caromed off the crossbar.  The back and forth contest could have gone either way until Earl Rhee was able to add an insurance goal near the end of the contest.  A few minutes later, the whistle sounded and the celebration began as the fans stormed the field to surround the team and enjoy the school’s first championship.  After the celebration on the field, the team lined up in front of the fans for the special presentation of a beautiful new soccer trophy to place in the Family Life Center gymnasium–scheduled to open in February 2009.  During the trophy presentation, Miles Herron was also named the games Most Valuable Player.  Congratulations to the HCA Eagles and Coach Zach Thompson on a tremendous and historical season!  For local media coverage of the match, visit the Marianas Variety and the Pacific Daily NewsThank You to No Ka Oi for their support of the Harvest soccer team. Their willingness to go out of their way helped make the championship game a huge success.

Sunday, December 14, 2008: The Harvest Baptist Church choir and orchestra, under the direction of Kevin Inafuku, presented two performances of “A Great and Mighty Wonder” at 4 pm and 7 pm. Afterwards, Pastor Herron summarized the musical presentation with a summary of the miracle found in John 3:16. For photos of the Christmas cantata and rehearsal, Click Here.

Ladies Christmas Fellowship

by John ~ December 11th, 2008

Tuesday, December 9, 2008: The ladies of Harvest Baptist Church along with several guests came together for the annual “Ladies Christmas Fellowship”–an evening of beauty and inspiration, as well as fun and fellowship. Those in attendance were blessed by the hospitality of Robin Babin, the hostess of the event, and inspired by the beautiful music that was shared by several ladies. Mrs. Pam Fox was an encouragement as she shared her testimony of how God has lead her family over the years to do His will. The evening ended with a time of laughter and entertainment with a skit featuring a “shoe support group.” The ladies came away from the annual Christmas fellowship having spent a wonderful time together, away from the busyness and holiday stress, having taken the time to reflect on the Lord, and to enjoy fellowship together as women. FLC: Power and Parking Update

by John ~ December 9th, 2008

The opening of the FLC is just weeks away and the progress being made becomes more evident each day.  The recent removal of all the overhead power lines makes the already neat and clean Harvest campus look even better.

View from the FLC shows the Harvest campus with all power lines removed.

Before removing the power lines, all the power and generators had to be connected through underground conduits.  This will provide a tremendous help in keeping the power on during times of adverse weather conditions.

The generator will keep the FLC cool and bright during dark and humid storm conditions

In the FLC, the new generator backup will provide more power, operate much quieter, and transfer in half the time as the current church generator backup system.  The new generator can provide power for the entire building, including the entire air conditioning system.

Although it is difficult to see all the progress taking place inside the FLC, one obvious sign of improvement is the final touches on the FLC parking area.  The lot has been paved, the parking spaces painted, and grass, trees, and flowers planted.  The new parking area will add over 100 much needed spaces.  Work on the FLC continues inside on the classrooms, chapel, excercise room, and gymnasium floor.  Look for a new update on the FLC progress each week.  In the meantime, CLICK HERE to visit the Family Life Center page and see a continuously updated photo of the building.
