Math Counts Preparation
On Saturday, March 13, part of the Harvest Christian Academy Math Counts team had the opportunity to demonstrate what they have been learning in Math Counts. At a golf tournament specifically designed to raise funds for the Math Counts chapter of Guam, HCA was invited to help the golfers participating see just what Math Counts is all about. The director of Guam Math Counts felt that the golfers did not really have a grasp of what Math Counts is all about. To remedy that situation, the Director invited the team from HCA, the winning team from the chapter competition, to compete against the golfers in a few Math Counts scenarios in order to give them a taste of what the students learn in math counts. Each team member was given a chance to compete against one golfer and were given problems from a 2006 State competition. The golfers solved about 4 problems, and the team members solved about 7 problems. To be honest, not many of the golfers were willing to step out of their comfort zone and take on the students! One golfer who did try, lost and then donated an extra $50 to Math Counts after seeing what a good program it is. The team enjoyed the challenge of facing off against adults and showing their math skills. It also helped to prepare them for the State competition taking place on Saturday, March 20.
