Friday, February 26, 2010: Living on a tropical island with a rich cultural heritage is a wonderful experience. The students of Harvest Christian Academy had the opportunity to enjoy a little “island life” during the school day on Friday. To begin with, students came to school dressed in a variety of colorful island shirts, shorts, and dresses. The entire student body along with parents and relatives were welcome to purchase a delicious Chamorro feast including chicken kelaguen, red rice, BBQ beef, fruit, and vegetables. The Senior Class helped with lunch in order raise funds for their upcoming class trip. Classes all across campus enjoyed special island and cultural themed events like the “Capture the Coconut” game in sixth grade with teams like the “Taylorfofo’s” and “Potterita’s”–a nod to Guam villages like Talafofo and Santa Rita. Fourth graders were visited by a canine unit in order to learn how island officials are working to control the brown tree snake population. Fifth graders are learning about World War II and viewed a movie to learn about the Japanese occupation of Guam during that time period. A number of the younger children enjoyed a real treat–a visit from a Guam caribou. Some got to pet the large beast while others even enjoyed a caribou ride. All the students were dismissed early and were excitedly looking forward to a long weekend with no school on Monday as the island marks “Discovery Day!”
