Harvest Library Summer Renovation

School’s out for the summer but there is still a lot of hard work taking place in the Lang Memorial Library at Harvest. Summer time is the perfect time to re-do all the carpeting and paint which has not been done for well over ten years. But repainting and re-carpeting is made much more difficult when there are thousands of books stacked high on numerous shelves throughout the entire facility. This was and is a huge project. ALL of the materials have to come off the shelves to paint the wall and put in new carpet. But, the books have to be moved in a very organized manner as eventually, they will all have to be put back in the correct place. After much research on how other libraries have gone through this process, the best case scenario was to purchase and use 200 boxes that were 36” long, 12” deep and 12” high. The number of boxes used corresponds to the largest amount of books in one of the three phases of the project.  Each box is numbered 1 – 200 and each phase of book stacks were also numbered 1 – 200. Mr. Bob Shuck, the HCA Librarian, would like to thank everyone who has a part in this major undertaking. This includes the awesome crew of Bonnie Bayless and Lisa Flower who have worked on the loading and unloading of boxes, Jacob Ignacio and Bryce Leon Guerrero who have helped with moving materials, Tim Pratt and Michael Hennegan who helped with the installation of the new shelving, and Randy Lemul, Joshua Fox, Jacob, and Bryce who have all worked on the painting. The first phase of the library renovation is now complete–resulting in the Ruby Red color of the Reading Room–including some new kid friendly stuffed animals to greet young readers. Phase 2 and 3 of this nine week renovation project are currently underway.
